Open Colosseum - Community Tested

Writer: whatsyourgam3whatsyourgam3

Every week, I throw down a gaming challenge in my Discord. We pick a game, dive in, and players submit screenshots proving they hit a milestone or scored big. Prizes? Either a random raffle for those who complete the challenge or a leaderboard showdown for top scores. To wrap it up, everyone fills out a quick Google Form for feedback—sweetened by another raffle.

This week, we played Open Colosseum, a crypto battle royale on mobile where the longer you survive, the bigger and stronger you get. It’s a mix of survival, fast-paced action, and Web3 mechanics. But how did the community feel about it?

How Long Did You Play?

Time invested is a solid indicator of engagement. Most players fell into three groups:

  • 4+ hours club (7 players)

  • 2-4 hours range (7 players)

  • 1-2 hours (5 players)

A solid number of players stuck around for extended play sessions, though a few bounced early due to issues with gameplay or engagement.

Did You Recommend the Game to Friends?

  • Yes – 13 players

  • No – 4 players

Most players found it enjoyable enough to recommend, though a few were put off by specific gameplay elements.

Did Questing and Rewards Keep Players Hooked?

  • Yes – 14 players

  • No – 3 players

A strong majority found the questing and rewards system to be a compelling reason to keep playing. However, some players felt the gameplay loop didn’t offer enough variety to hold their interest long-term.

Ease of Access: Smooth or Frustrating?

  • Most players rated it 8-10, meaning it was generally easy to pick up.

  • Some players gave it a 4-6, citing onboarding friction or issues with understanding mechanics.

Overall, the game is accessible, but a few refinements in tutorials or UI improvements could help newcomers adjust faster.

Controls: Intuitive or Clunky?

  • Scores ranged from 2 to 10, with most in the 7-10 range.

  • Some mobile users struggled with responsiveness and button placement.

The controls were mostly well-received, but a few players felt they needed better optimization, particularly for mobile devices.

Graphics: Visually Appealing or Needs Work?

  • Most players rated graphics 7-10.

  • A couple of players rated it lower, with one calling it "meh" and another mentioning lag.

While the overall visual presentation was appreciated, some players reported performance issues that impacted their experience.

Core Gameplay Loop: Addictive or Repetitive?

  • Most players rated it 7-10, enjoying the battle royale survival mechanics.

  • Some found it repetitive, especially with a lack of variation in fights.

The gameplay loop works well when fights are balanced, but when battles feel uneven or lack variety, engagement drops off.

Story: Does It Matter?

  • Scores ranged from 1-10, with a majority landing around 5-7.

  • Some players enjoyed the lore, while others felt it wasn’t a key selling point.

Since this is a battle royale, story takes a backseat to gameplay. However, more world-building elements might help immersion.

Hero & Equipment Variations: Enough Depth?

  • Scores mostly fell in the 7-10 range.

  • A few players wanted more strategic depth and better balance.

Players enjoyed the variation in heroes and gear, but some mentioned that a few setups felt overpowered.

Final Thoughts: The Verdict from the Community

Players had plenty to say about their experiences, from frustrations to outright praise. Here’s what stood out:

  • Matchmaking and balance issues – “Fights are either too easy or completely unfair.”

  • Progression & rewards were engaging – “The game kept me coming back for more.”

  • Needs better optimization – “Lag and unresponsive controls hurt the experience.”

  • Great concept, mixed execution – “The idea is great, but it needs refining.”

Conclusion: What Needs Work?

Strengths:

  • Fast-paced and engaging survival mechanics

  • Reward system keeps players coming back

  • Solid hero and equipment variety

  • Strong replayability for competitive players

Needs Improvement:

  • Performance issues (lag, UI responsiveness)

  • Some balancing concerns for fair fights

  • More variety needed in gameplay loop

Overall, Open Colosseum has a solid foundation but needs some refinements to reach its full potential. If matchmaking, performance, and balance improve, it could be a top-tier battle royale.

Today we game.
