Mojo Melee: Review

[originally posted 21 December 2023]

“Redefining strategy multiplayer pvp autochess battlers”

TLDR:

  • Very accessible

  • Easy to pick up

  • Pleasing animations and graphics

  • Moderate strategic depth

How to play

  • Free to play

  • Available on PC and mobile

Game Loop

  • Before entering the battle you need to select your team

  • Each team requires a mojo

  • These are your team captains and come with a variety of types

  • You then select 4 units and 2 spell stones

Selection of champions and spell stones

  • The units have a variety of stats including, health, armor, attack, attack range etc

  • The spell stones are attacks, buffs, or debuffs

  • All have a gold cost

  • Once your deck is set you can choose your battle

  • You have an option of duel or melee

  • Duel is a simple 1v1 for the best of 3 rounds, Melee is a round-robin tournament for 8v8 all-out brawl

  • In battle, the board is split in half, and you place units on your half

  • Your half of the board is a 4 by 8 grid

  • You start with 10 gold and draw 3 options from your team pool

  • If you place multiple of the same unit/spell it levels up, increasing its stats and abilities

  • If you don’t like your options you can pay gold to re roll

  • After selecting your units and positioning, the troops auto-battle.

  • Over time their special meter fills up until they unleash it on the map

  • This loop repeats until one player has won 3 rounds

  • Between each round, you are also shown “ghosts” of where the opponent troops used to be

  • Outside the game loop, the game employs battle passes and XP to unlock rewards in-game

Battle pass progression and rewards

Game feel

  • As you only start with a few units, it is simple enough to pick your first team

  • Progressing through the battle pass you unlock chests containing currencies and units, this adds the level of strategy required to build your team

  • As your team is only small and there isn’t synergy, as seen in other games, the strategic depth does lean more toward the casual side

  • The graphics and animations are engaging both in the browser and on mobile

Battle during the auto battle phase

  • The path of finding an AI for the units seems to do well, and I’ve not had any moments where I was upset with the movement

  • The duels are relatively quick, making for bite-sized gameplay

  • With the melees offering longer tournaments for a more intense game session

  • The variety of battle passes and ranks provides a reason to keep playing to level up your team

  • As you collect in the game you can also upgrade the units that you already have

  • I did prefer playing it on mobile

  • If you don’t find any players you are matched with a bot, so you can always play a game

Rating

  • Easy to pick up

  • More casual strategic depth

  • Nice graphics and animations

  • More bot games than I’d like

  • Would recommend it with the caveat that it isn’t a sweaty auto-chess game

Rating card - Enjoyed

Web3 integration

  • The characters come with an NFT version available on the Polygon blockchain.
